One of Manila’s tallest buildings, Shangri-La at the Fort, will host the city’s only international stair climbing race – the Kerry Sports Manila Vertical Run.

On August 14, 2016, runners will start at the hotel’s lobby and ascend 59 floors to the penthouse level. They will face the challenge of running up over 1,300 steps to a height of 250 metres. Stair climbing, first known as “vertical races” in the 1970s, is now a global sport with stair climbing clubs hailing from the US, Canada, Europe and Asia, as well as professional athletes who train year-round to be the first to reach the top of the world’s tallest buildings. “Stair climbing is a bit like the challenge of Mount Everest; why do people climb it? Because it’s there. Because it’s a challenge! These buildings are beacons. They are symbols of the growth of the cities and societies they exist in. In terms of economic growth, Manila is one of the fastest growing cities in the world and Shangri-La at the Fort is emblematic of the Philippines emergence,” says David Shin, Race Director of event organiser Sporting The Kerry Sports Manila Vertical Run , governed by the International Skyrunning Federation, has been selected as Official Race for the 2016 Vertical World Circuit (VWC), the world’s premier skyscraper racing circuit, uniting some of the world’s most iconic skyscraper races, including Beijing’s China World Summit Wing and London’s Tower 42.

“We are proud to be bringing the Vertical World Circuit to the Philippines for the first time and having the world’s best stair climbers participating at the inaugural Kerry Sports Manila Vertical Run,” said John Rice, General Manager of Shangri-La at the Fort, Manila. “We look forward to hosting them and the hundreds of participants who will sign up for the challenge.”

  10. MILO Marathon is an institution an considered the Holy Grail of running in the Philippines. The other event may want to rethink their plans while still early if they want to attract more participants especially from the elite runners.

  11. May mga division din ba dito? Kasi Milo Marathon finisher’s veteran na ako (60 yrs. old).

  12. Milo! With the hot temperature you will die of suffocation running indoor plus vertical. Not good idea. Except if the bldg is centralize airconditioned including the stairways

  13. Milo for me.. i have my goal for this race & stick to it no matter what :-) with my Milo marathoner bro Brian Melchor Tuzon

  14. mhirap ung isa. stair climbing eh.. kung di ka injured pwede nting subukan. kaya lang sabi s ibang comments, para yan sa malabakal na tuhod at binti. hahaha U0001f602

  17. Open na ata reg Edgie. Pagisipan mo muna. Para tayo naka stair master nito

  18. Uphill na literal! Kaso sa fire escape ba yan aakyat? Di ba mainit dun tapos madaming aakyat? O by batch siguro..

  19. du30 . That’s what I’m saying about vertical runs. They keep getting postponed until the event doesn’t push through at all. Sana this one is different.

  20. i would rather join the PF KASAMA RUN… kaysa umakyat ng gusali, gitgitan pa mangyayari…
