Indoor climbing is steadily gaining ground among young Filipinos – and it is easy to see why.

More than just a full-body workout, climbing combines strength, balance, problem-solving, and a strong sense of community. But as more people discover the sport, proper training, safety, and recovery become even more important.

Power Up Alabang recently welcomed a new batch of recreational climbers for the Southeast Asia Climbing Federation Level 1 Certification, with Kenny Rogers Roasters Philippines supporting the participants throughout the intensive training day.

Learning to Climb Safely

The SEACF Level 1 Certification introduces climbers to the essential skills needed to become safer and more responsible members of the climbing community.

Participants learned about proper equipment use, belaying, safety checks, partner communication, climbing etiquette, and risk management.

While climbing higher and completing more challenging routes may be the exciting part, knowing how to protect yourself and your climbing partner is just as important.

According to SEACF-certified instructor and lead facilitator Coach Jao Sauco, the growing interest in certification reflects how the local climbing community is maturing.

“Seeing recreational climbers voluntarily invest in certification is one of the strongest indicators of the sport’s growth. They’re learning proper systems, improving their skills, and becoming reliable climbing partners. That’s the kind of culture we want to build.”

Certification is not only about improving technique. It is also about becoming someone others can confidently climb with.

Fueling Recovery After the Climb

Climbing may look controlled and graceful from the ground, but it demands a lot from the body. Grip strength, core stability, mobility, and mental focus are constantly tested throughout every session.

To help participants recover after the training, Kenny Rogers Roasters served its Healthy Plates as post-workout meals.

The meals provided protein, fiber, and iron to help replenish energy and support recovery after a demanding day on the wall.

“At Kenny Rogers Roasters, we believe that better nutrition fuels an active lifestyle,” said Rei Felizario, Assistant Marketing Manager of Kenny Rogers Roasters Philippines. “Through our partnership with Power Up Alabang, we’re proud to support a community that values health, performance, and continuous growth.”

For active individuals, training is only one part of the journey. Proper rest and nutrition remain important—because even Spider-Man probably needs a recovery meal after hanging from walls all day.

Growing the Sport Beyond the Wall

The partnership also highlights the importance of developing good habits beyond climbing itself.

“As more Filipinos discover climbing, we’re equally intentional about promoting good habits beyond the wall,” said Gretchen Que, Partner and Marketing Director of Power Up Alabang. “Proper nutrition is a key part of an active lifestyle, and Kenny Rogers Roasters helps make healthy post-climb meals more accessible to our community.”

As indoor climbing continues to attract more Filipinos, initiatives that combine education, safety, fitness, and nutrition can help create a stronger and more sustainable community.

For the latest batch of certified climbers, completing the program was not simply about reaching the top. It was about learning how to climb smarter, support their partners, and help make the sport safer for everyone.
