The 2024 Bagtit Ultra emerges as a prestigious event in the Asia Trail Master Championship Series, offering an exhilarating challenge for trail runners across the globe. This event spans across the scenic landscapes of Mt. Damas and Mt. Sem-ilya in the Philippines, showcasing the diverse and rugged terrains these mountains offer.
Participants can choose from three categories: the formidable 100km, the strenuous 50km, and the demanding 30km races. Notably, both the 100km and 50km races are crucial for championship points, with the 100km category providing the added incentive of a Grandmaster point, elevating the competitive spirit of the race.
The term “Bagtit,” meaning ‘crazy’ in Ilocano, aptly describes the ultra trail runners who dare to conquer these extreme distances, surpassing the traditional marathon length. The race is not only a test of physical endurance but also a mental challenge, as runners navigate the technical trails of Mt. Damas and Mt. Sem-ilya.
Mt. Damas offers breathtaking views of the Tarlac and Pangasinan plains, and the distant Mt. Arayat, making it a picturesque but challenging part of the race. Conversely, Mt. Sem-ilya presents less-explored paths, adding an element of mystery and adventure to the race. This year’s route also extends to the Anzap Twin Falls in Mayantoc and Sitio Tala in San Jose, stretching the longest category to an impressive 100km.
The Bagtit Ultra not only promotes physical fitness and tourism but also aims to discover and nurture local trail running talents. The event has a history of supporting local athletes, as seen with the participation of runners from Papaac, Camiling in both local and national competitions.
