The sand dune cometh . . . for the third time. Reminiscent of the classic Frank Herbert sci-fi novel minus the sandworms and Fremens, we tirelessly bring you the challenging sand dunes in the third running of the Laoag Marathon. Gradually gaining a following in Philippine running, the sand dunes once again invite you, runners (Pinoy, Kenyan or any other citizen of running) to a roller coaster run on this awe-inspiring jewel of Laoag.

For the first timers, welcome to the Sunshine City experience of beauty in sandy undulations highlighted by a mesmerizing West Philippine Sea in its unique shade of blue. Feast the eyes with centuries-old St. William’s Cathedral and Tobacco Monopoly Monument, haunting in their light-bedecked outline against a background of breaking dawn. Witness the re-invented allure of the Provincial Capitol and the City Hall, still colorfully radiant with the recent holiday lights. Behold the majestic sinking bell tower and wonder how in days of yore a horse-riding “campanero” used to fit in its gate. Traverse the original Laoageño runner’s fave – the kilometer-long Gilbert Bridge overlooking the grand Padsan River. Visit the idyllic barangay of Gabu where you will be greeted by the smiles of friendly fisherfolks in their bancas and the fresh catch of the day. Have a glimpse of Laoag International Airport with its magnanimous control tower and 3-kilometer runway just a stone’s throw away from Gabu.

All these in one single 26-miler. For the veterans of the Laoag Marathon, dare yourself to a better finish time. Re-live the spots where the calf seized, where the heart went into hyperdrive, where oxygen debt surged to the top and discover “it ain’t that bad the second (or third) time around”. Savor and enjoy at the same time the nostalgic sights, smell and sound of beautiful Laoag. Pain and pleasure after all belong in just one continuous spectrum. So lace those shoes and join us once more to feel the unique Ilocos runner’s high. “Agtaray tayon ditoy Laoag Marathon 2014!”

  1. Based on actual running experience Laoag City can be considered runners haven due to the concrete road network and law abiding motorists. Runners who want to have a vacation and running expedition should consider Laoag City.
