Run for the Mangroves 2013 – October 19, 2013

Run for the Mangroves is an advocacy project of the Consular Corps of the Philippines under its Social Development Committee and Environment Committee, still in partnership with Conservation International.

We depend on the mangroves for food, protection, and livelihood. Needless to say, to save the mangroves is to save lives.

Let us run for the mangroves while we still can.

  1. Did you know that the center of the center of the world’s marine shorefish biodiversity is in the Philippines?

Located in the heart of the Coral Triangle, the epicenter of the world’s marine fish and coral biodiversity, the Philippines’ Verde Island Passage is regarded as the center of the center of the world’s marine shorefish biodiversity. It provides critical ecosystem services to support the livelihoods and food security over seven million people through livelihoods and food security.

But this way of life is threatened by climate change; the impacts of which affect not only the region’s fragile ecosystems and species, but also the communities that rely on fishing and tourism for their livelihoods, and mangroves for coastal protection from storms.

The Consular Corps of the Philippines, in partnership with Conservation International, in an effort to protect and promote the Verde Island Passage’s ecological sustainability and biodiversity, planted 30,000 mangrove seedlings in Baco, Oriental Mindoro in 2011. This year, the Consular Corps furthers its Verde Island Passage’s protection efforts by committing to rehabilitate 20 hectares of mangrove forests in Calatagan, Batangas.

This is the power behind the RUN FOR THE MANGROVES fun run on 19 October 2013, 4:30AM, at the Bonifacio Global City.

We have but only one Verde Island Passage, one Philippines, one Coral Triangle, one Earth. For this cause alone, we know we can count on your support for RUN FOR THE MANGROVES.
