PRESS RELEASE

Kenyans in 1-2-3 finish in Yakult 10 Miler

Willy Rotich found little challenge from local foes as he and two other Kenyans once again came up with a 1-2-3 finish in the 24rd Yakult 10-Miler (16-kilometer) yesterday at the Cultural Center Complex in Pasay City.

With last year’s winner Benjamin Kipkazi not around to chase him, Rotich reached the Star City finish line along Vicente Sotto Ave. in 51 minutes and 30 seconds.
Rotich, who is still sore from a trailing running competition he joined with Kipkazi last Friday, was one minute and 14 seconds ahead of Eliud Kering, who was the only one chasing him halfway into the race.

Another Kenyan, Elijah Kipruto, took third coming in with a clocking of 54:20.

Far Eastern University varsity runner Darwin Lim, back from a three-month layoff and a left knee injury, placed fourth in 56:55. “The race was nice and smooth, and it was only my friends Eliud and Elijah who were chasing me,” said Rotich, who was runner-up to Kipkazi last year. In the women’s division, FEU varsity bet Jennysmyl Mabunga surprised defending champion Irine Kipchumba for the women’s 16K honors.

The 20-year old Mabunga pounced on an opportunity to leave behind Kipchumba after the first seven kilometers of the race and clocked a time of 1:03.14. Kipchumba arrived at the finish line, some six minutes and 14 seconds behind Mabunga, who earned the P7000 top purse with Rotich. Batangueno runner Bendoy Junrel topped the men’s 5-km run in 16:49, while insurance company employee Alyssa Casaclang won the women’s side in 23:39. Mark Alvin de Roxas ruled the 3-km boys (10-12 year old) action, while Tara Borlain dominated the girls side with sister Samantha. Miguel Ignacio clinched the 3km boys (6-9 years old) side with Nyvella Imbao in the girls section.

Michael Ong, head Yakult Sales and Planning department with Mitsuo Taniguchi, Plant Manager, Koji Kuroda, Plant Technical Consultant, Kenjie Egami, Project Manager for Yakult Phils, Inc, awarded the cash prizes, trophies and Yakult gift packs, while Connie Fortich, Skechers Ambassdor, awarded the Skechers performance shoes and Skechers apparel. Over 2300 runners saw action in this event which is also supported by Skechers.

  1. My observations are: On time gunstart for 16k. Pagkatapos na pagkatapossilent warmup start agad. Okay naman hydration stations may sponges pa last few kms of the race. No congestion kasi konti lang sumali. Marked naman distances.

After I got ung pinakaaasam ko na 1 bottle yakult and one-size medium shirt na amoy bagong hango sa imprenta, patuyo lang ako na pawis, kain ng taho, bihis then uwi na para kumain ng tapsilog at tsokolate na hinanda ni misis. And sarap!!! Sana maulit muli.

Congrats Andrea Llena for your first 16k finished

Bilis ni erpat lamang samin ng 18 minutes :)

  4. this is my first time at masaya ang experience! simple lang ung event pero OK na OK. sana lang totoo ung over-sized yakult hahaha!

nakita ko si Zorro ng UP (with picture pa) hehehe ^^

  5. simple yet effective… On time gunstart, with marker for every km, road closure, ambulance, sufficient hydration. ayos na ayos for 500.

  6. Perfect choice…next year uli…also yong skechers….dami damihan dalang baon…nabunot ko dri fit t shirt ubos na daw…he he he

  7. It was a good first 16k run. Clocked in 1:34:xx for 16.02 km based on my Soleus Ok ang route and sufficient water stations. Very relaxed walang clutter from start to finish. I think tama lang na ganito ang mga runs, mura and takbo talaga ang focus. Will run with Yakult again next year.

  8. I hope the organizers would make it special for next year’s 25th year. Maybe a commemorative medal! Kahit mas mahal ng konti. This is one of the pioneers together with Milo that’s still existing and it’s a one of a kind race kasi bihira and 10 mile run. So sana organizers make it more memorable next year.

though my run is good and my apprentice had done good on this one as well. tnx for the run organizers

  10. i was there coz i took pictures of my hubby. his first official run for 16km which he finished for 1:40:38. not bad for a first-timer. the event was well-organized. yun nga lang bakit isa lang ang binigay na yakult sa kanya while others daw ay dalawa? hehehe dapat nga 5 bts dahil 16k nah eh. anyway, we enjoyed it.

  11. Nice race! Very simple yet effective race management. But I would take this Yakult race over the other anytime. Timely start, straightforward route, more than enough hydration, emergency response team available, marked distance, enough and not dour looking marshals, no “combat” with motorists as police officers were manning the major intersections. The 2 flyovers were more than enough challenge as you have to do them twice in the first 8k. Well, better than having them in the last 8k!

Medals?? Energy drink?? Kanya-kanya pang kuha ng time. Pride in finishing at good time lang ang reward ng mga runners noon. Think about that when you do run.

I will run Yakult again next year or until my knees can take the punishment.

    Congratulations Yakult! Next year ulet.

  14. okay na sa kin yung shirt kahit hindi dri-fit. hope to do better next year (kailangan pala mag-heat training if gun start stays at 5:30)

Be Fair naman.

What do you expect, mas mura eh. Sana lang next time isang pack naman ng yakult ang ipamigay instead of just one bottle. bitin eh. :)

    • Seems like gun time. I am also 52 sec late in stepping into timing may at start as I am located at the very end of the 16k pack. But no matter. Di naman ako elite runner and I usually time myself well.

  19. Good smoothh run..sana lng may nklagay sa shrt kng ilan km ung natpos mu hehehe… And napansin ko ng since nung pauwi nko bago tumawid sa traders my mga runners pa n pprating pero pina-go p rn ng mmda at pulis ung nga sskyan so ung mganahuli lalong nahuli kc hminto p sila to give way sa motorist..

  20. hydration stations far from each other. no photographers as usual… i guess we already know why. overall it was a nice run inabutan nga lang ng araw mga runners …

  21. Aaminin ko na kaya ako sumali dito kasi naubusan ako ng slot sa kabila pero I am very happy na dito ako nakatakbo kasi i just found out na this is probably the 2nd longest running event next to Milo if I’m not mistaken since I’m new to joining running events. Hindi kasing laki ng Nestle ang Yakult pero they still continue to organize the event.

  22. Congratulations to Yakult and all the runners for this great event.

    Specific comments:

    1. Nice route.

    2. Good pacing of the run streams also. Never encountered congestion or unnecessary crowding.

    3. Thank you Yakult lady for the 2 extra bottles. Pa-cute lang kasi, I don’t think It’s an unreasonable request naman given the circumstance, just be polite and pleasant about it.

    now the bad:
    4. As usual, garbage problems. Sana may point before the run where the organizers talk about proper disposal. Nairita talaga ako to see people just casually throwing the cups on the road. Moreover, a vertical cylindrical bin is not ideal. Siguro for Yakult, and future running organizations, the ideal would be a long box, 2 meter length, .75m width, and .75m height (imagine a 6-foot fridge box laid on its side), located maybe at least 10 meters after the hydration stations.

    5. Sa organizers, kung may event po kayo na imamarket, please distribute flyers naman AFTER the finish line! May mga nagflyer 200-100 meters before the finish, yung iba nangharang pa. Seriously?

PS. Anong mayroon sa UST that morning? I was at Q.Ave – Espana rotonda 4:30 when we were made to reroute, 5:15 na ulit ako nakalabas ng Q. Blvd. Buti na lang I still had 5 minutes to warm up before the gun start!

Again, great run and congratulations to all!

  23. The run was well organized :) though medjo nagka aberya ang warm up kasi mahina ang speakers at walang ilaw for the warm up leader hahaha tsaka sarap ng takbo kasi hindi congested. It was though my best time for a 5km run @33.43, I know mabagal to pero from a couch potato into a baked potato ok na! will be running next year.

  27. wala ata silang chip time, nag base sila ng timing sa gun start. i was 10mins late for 16k. nakatakbo nako after ng 5k before 3k. nag self timer ako and it shows na nadagdag yung late time ko..p.r parin

Simple, wala kiyeme, diretso takbo, pahinga, tapos uwi. Makikita mo yung contrast with RU1. Parang old school versus hip new generation na run. It depends on how you look at it. Bottom line is takbo pa rin sila pareho.

  30. i’m glad may post-race press release featuring the top finishers, to give credit where credit is due. (for me it’s the top finishers who really should get medals sa mga runs. tapos i’ll be happy with a shirt or a small token). cheers!
