Dare to Do: 8 Running Resolutions and What You Can Do to Achieve Theme

Happy 2016! It’s that time of the year again where we all vow to be the healthier and fitter versions of ourselves. Don’t worry – we’re here to help you make your running resolutions happen with these tips!

Resolution 1: I want to get into running.

How to do it: The good news is anyone can be a runner. Start by walking a lot. Then you can gradually add running into a 30-minute run-walk routine (alternate 4 minutes of walking with 2 minutes of running for example) until you can confidently run the whole time.

Resolution 2: I want to make a running comeback.

How to do it: If you just came from an injury, you should be able to walk for 45 minutes without feeling any pain. If you have stopped running for more than 3 months, you’ll have to start all over again. Be patient with yourself; it may take a couple of weeks (or months) before your body can adjust to running again. Increase your mileage slowly.

Resolution 3: I want to run my first 5K.

How to do it: Join a running club, or ask your best friend or a family member to train with you. This will make running more fun. Having people to run with boosts your motivation, too!

Don’t stress if you think you’re slower than everyone else. What’s important is that you completed the distance and you enjoyed the experience!

Resolution 4: I want to complete my first half marathon.

How to do it: Take your training seriously. If you’re searching for a training plan online, look for a program that’s longer than 10 weeks to give your body time to get used to the new challenge.

Note that these training plans assume that you already run at least 25 kilometers a week. So start building your base!

Resolution 5: I want to do my first full marathon.

How to do it: Sign up for The Bull Marathon, the first and only marathon in the world designed for first-time marathoners. It’s a great support group that will boost your confidence to complete your Full Mary dream.

We’ve also listed down marathon do’s and don’ts for you to keep in mind.

Resolution 6: I want to beat my PR!

How to do it: Do speed workouts. Coach Titus Salazar (0920-5367038) conducts speed training sessions to help you run faster and injury-free.

You can also build your endurance by running to places you would usually drive/commute to, like the grocery or the gym.

Resolution 7: I want to do something different…like get into triathlon!

How to do it: If you have 0 knowledge of swimming and/or cycling, make baby steps and learn them this year! One of our readers signed up for swimming lessons and shared his experience here.

Resolution 8: I want to eat healthier.

How to do it: You can start by going for more nutritious post-run food options. Check out our list!
