  1. I wasn’t able to run Bullrun this year and just learned about Mr. Defeo yesterday (I didn’t know him pero pag me mamamatay sa running community you can’t help but feel sadden)

I doubt blaming lack of bananas as reason for the death (potassium can be acquired through power hydration) even plausible. If the heart was ill in the first place nothing you can eat can stop you from cardiac arrest. When it comes to heart ailments you have to understand it’s ‘conditioning’ the heart, if he had an existing heart ailment the only way you can prevent the heart from failing is through maintenance and proper diet, so when he entered the race his heart wasn’t up to it already. It only takes a brief shift in your daily routine and diet to cause an ailing heart to fail. For example the stress of the holidays could have triggered this problem, lack of sleep, poor and high caloric diet, and lack of regular exercise (Not saying this is the cause, but these contribute to the status of your heart.)

Me heart ailment din kasi ako (apart from my asthma), and I know these things are high factors in keeping the heart in condition ‘before’ a long distance run. I’ll suffer the consequence on the road (palpitation, hyperventilation, dizziness, and fatigue.) It’s a risk you take when you register for runs.

So I believe no one is to blame here, pero maganda yung idea to have a doctor during race events, kahit isa lang. Pero it’s the responsibility of runners (all of us) to get a thorough check up before our races, mas lalo na pagkatapos ng holiday seasons.

Mr. Defeo ran a good race, and I feel (like any of us) dieing on the road trying to get to the finish is a peaceful way of dying. You died doing what you love and with the people you call friends and family.

So I hope there won’t be any finger pointing anymore, or taking blame.

Again, bihira lang mag ‘fail’ ang perfectly healthy heart… it’s very rare. Besides Mr. Defeo was no amateur so I’m pretty sure he knew what he was doing during the run, talagang oras na nya.

  2. My condolences.

While bull run is one of my favorite races, I was not able to join as I am not mentally prepared for it.

Hopefully we learn from this incident so as to prevent it from happening again

    1. Potassium shortage does not happen in an hour. Talagang short na sya simula pa lang. No amount of bananas could help at that time.

    2. Regular checkups. People start dying 10k onwards.

    3. Listen to your body. Ano ba talaga? No guts no glory, no pain no gain? Contradicting ah. Sa akin, mas approriate ang run another day. This could mean a DNF or DNS kung hindi talaga kaya. I have a 6 year old daughter, and I still plan to walk her down the aisle someday.

    4. Very important but few know the legal implications. Transferred bib does not give you the full rights of the registered runner. For short, bandit.

    5. This could happen anytime, anywhere. It would be much worse if this was only a training run. Unfortunately, there was nothing that could be done that fateful morning.

A sad way to start the year for the whole community.

  10. over all the race was ok.. medyo nasanay lng cguro ako sa ibang organizers kaya medyo na feel ko.. na kulang ung portalets.. ung baggage counter medyo limited din ung tao.. ung time sana na iwawarm up namin nauwi lng sa pila.. the space was a bit crowded kasi sa daanan lng.. maybe because it a run for the economy kaya medyo limited ung ibang aspects ng race like hydration.. which for me was really kulang.. but still enjoy pa rin.. kasi ito ung race na marami akong pictures.. hahaha..
