Lorna Vejano, or Mamita as people fondly call her, is the first-ever Queen of the Rock of the Corregidor Marathon, 1st runner-up in the 2014 Baler Marathon, finisher of the 2014 Bataan Death March 102K Ultramarathon and of more than 100 other races.

She’s also a member of the National Masters and Seniors Athletics Association of the Philippines and competes at the World and Asia Masters Athletics Championships.

Lorna, a 55-year-old mother of two, successful business woman, dancer, tennis player, and runner extraordinaire shares her story and proves that it’s never too late to start running, and even actually excel in it.

How and When did you get into running?

So back to back sumali na ako. Sabado at Linggo.

Way of thanking the club. Within 3 years nakuha ko yun. Sa ngayon, 55 years old na ako, 154 na medals ko.

Why did you decide to take up running seriously at your age?

Which of your running achievements are you most proud of?
Of course, yung Corregidor International Marathon. I am the first Queen of the Rock.

What does your typical training look like?
I train 2-3x a week. Kunyari, Tuesday ko 10K. Thursday, 15 to 20K, then 30K. Basta dapat pag Saturday or Sunday laging may long run. Regardless of kilometers basta ang target mo yung time.

What are the struggles that you usually face when running? How do you manage it?
Kaya masasabi ko talaga, listen to your body. Kelangan basahin mo yung sarili mo.

Where do you draw your inspiration from? How do you stay motivated?
My inspiration of course is my family, The Fort striders Running Club, at ang extended family ko, ang Team Soleus.

Inspiration ko din yung aking mga targets. Kasi lagi akong may target.

What’s next for you — what are your goals for 2015 and beyond?
This year, ang target ko 12 marathons. Tapos pag na-check ko na lahat ng mga places na gusto kong marating through running, babalik ako sa pagte-tennis with my husband. And syempre yung dancing, di ko yan iiwan.

What do you think are the keys to your success, both in life and in running?
Parehas yan, success sa buhay at sa running. Sobrang tiyaga. Sobrang sipag. And syempre kasama dapat lagi si Lord. Dapat matiisin ka. Handang magsakripisyo. At tsaka dapat may target ka talaga. Aalamin mo ang gagawin mo. Meron kang goal.

What are the best pieces of advice anyone has given you?
May ka-partner ako sa tennis, si Col. Magdangal. Sabi niya, “You know Lorna, the secret to being young is sports”. For me, it’s true. Nagmamadali akong maka 100 medals.

What advice would you have for other runners or for those who want to start running?
Aba, GO! Wag magpatumpik tumpik. Wag mo sabihing walang time. Pag gusto, may paraan. Pag ayaw, may dahilan. Pag gusto mo, go ka lang. Also, practice, train hard, and enjoy every run. At gaya ng motto ko, “IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO PURSUE YOUR DREAMS”. – END
