(PRESS RELEASE)

World Vision gathers over 5,000 runners in charity event for children

For the third year, child-focused humanitarian organization World Vision held its biggest fundraising event, ‘World Vision Run 2014: Run for Children’ on June 22, at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. With an overwhelming turnout of 5,400 runners, the event became the most-attended in the run’s history.

Now an annual event, World Vision Run gathers different stakeholders and supporters in raising funds to help 8,000 children through its Child Sponsorship program. Participants ran the 500m, 3k, 5k, 10k, and 21k categories.

The event was well-supported by corporate and media partners, and World Vision celebrity-advocates, namely Christian Bautista, Marc Nelson, Tippy dos Santos, Jasmine Curtis, Sam Concepcion, and Aljur Abrenica.

Members of the Philippine Coast Guard also participated, led by their spokesperson Cdr. Armand Balilo, a staunch supporter of World Vision, being a former sponsored child, and now a child sponsor himself.

Six winners were chosen from each category – three for male, and three for female. The winners were awarded with gift prizes from the event sponsors.

Many ‘firsts’

In order to make the event even more meaningful and exciting for the participants, the organizers included several new features to the already fun-filled run.

In keeping with the family-oriented theme, the organizers included a 500-meter dash category for children up to 12 years old. The children were joined by their parents and guardians and received generous goodie bags from event partner, Toys ‘R Us.

Another delightful addition to this year’s run was a ‘Zumbathon’ (Zumba marathon). Organizers included this event as fitness experts recommend Zumba to be a good complement to running.

Meanwhile, 3k runner Arnel delos Santos chose the event as the perfect venue to propose to girlfriend Joyce Camantigue.

Friends of the couple lined up at the finish line wearing t-shirts that spelled out J-O-Y-C-E, and holding a streamer that read, “Will you marry ME?” Still catching her breath from finishing the race, Joyce said “Yes!” eliciting cheers from their fellow runners.

Advocacy Run

As an advocacy organization upholding the rights of children, World Vision made sure to include activities that will raise awareness on important issues. In the Advocacy Booth, race finishers posed with advocacy “fun” signs, which present World Vision’s advocacies on various child rights issues, with statement such as “No to child labor!” and “Ang batang laging handa, ligtas sa sakuna,” highlighting the importance of disaster preparedness among children and the youth.

Also a strong defender of the Milk Code and an advocate of breastfeeding, World Vision likewise set up a breastfeeding station encouraging mothers to nurse their infants. A gallery of best breastfeeding practices and tips was also displayed to educate on the many benefits of breastmilk.

For the young participants of the run, a Child Friendly Space (CFS) was set up where children were provided a safe place to play and learn while they waited for their run to start. Here, the children watched episodes of Superbook, featuring Bible stories and learned about their rights through games and other fun activities.

For more than 55 years, World Vision has given voice to the most vulnerable children in the Philippines through influencing policies that protect children’s well-being and educating publics about human and child rights.

  1. Overall the race was great. Decent route, sufficient hydration, and other runners are running at a faster pace than usual. The only downside is the chaotic distribution of the Tupperware eco-thingy water bottle. Some people are on the list they sent online, but weren’t on their actual list, so di rin nakakuha lahat. Apparently, it was supposed to be for the first 2000 registrants, yet they sent emails and made a list to about 2500 people. *facepalm*

    • kaya nga nagpa-asa lang sila sa tupperware water jug na yan di also send me email tpos nung kukunin na dun wla naman ang name mo nkka-inis at hinyang tpos ang iba na hindi kumuha i acoount pa daw yun aksi ang matitira para raw sa yolanda victims accdg.to them dapat suggestion ko di nalang sila nagbigay sa mga runners idonate nlang nila lahat yun sa yolanda victims total we can afford nman kami runners to buy water jugs eh mas kailangan yaan ng mga yolanda victims they need it more that we are.just an opinion and suggestion only.thx

  2. The 3k route is +/- 500m based on my Nike+Running App. Lets see the race results on the timing chip.

  3. Dun sa nabunggo ko kanina while I was throwing my cup sa chute (near mind museum I think) ..so sorry, it was my bad really.. Mejo congested talaga sa mga water stations nung nag merge na 21k with other runners pagbaba ng flyover…

my mistake was pag cut ko diagonally towards the garbage chute ng cup, di ko tiningnan yung straight direction ko after throwing the cup..so may nabunggo ako… Hindi din ata ako nakapagsorry verbally dahil may tubig pa ko sa bibig and I’m not sure kung naging visible pa yung hand gesture ko..

    :(

#Respect to all runners, fast or slow

  4. Ok yung event at yung route.

    • tapos may mga artista nga duon hrap nman magpa-picture sa kanila ang laki-laki ng mga bodyguard or bouncer nila akala mo sikat na sila eh wla pa ngang naprove na box office status at award giving bodies pag tntawag mo ayaw mamansin at ni ayaw tumingin sa mga fans nila next time wag nlang kayong pumunta dun yung aso nyo nlang ang kausapin nyo at maki selfie nlang kayo sa pet nyo at sa event nman kung ayaw nyong mkuhanan kayo ng pics at tumili sa inyo ng mga fans nyo kasi kung wala sila wala rin kayo sa pedestal nyo now besides u have nothing yet to prove ok.be kind to the people on ur way up because u will meet them on ur way down.just an opinion and observation dont be too personal

    • coastguard
ndi un nakaharang, ganun lng tlga sila, parang training nila un.
      eh di ikaw na umiwas!
      pakialamero!

  7. Okay naman yung run. Wala ako ma-icomplain since hindi nasa scope of control ni Coach Rio yung init ng araw. I got a new PR.

  9. awesome run… will definitely run again next year… no particular complaint except maybe on the claiming of the tupper ware eco-bottle which was supposed to be for the first 2000 registrants… i mean talk about lack of discipline… there were already designated lanes for specific bib numbers and yet people still refuse to fall in line… was so irritated with all the shoving that i decided not to claim anymore…

  10. I can’t find my name from the 21K results. Even my BIB# wasn’t there.

As for the race, okay naman yung route. Slowest 21K. Bawi na lang sa susunod. :)

  11. Finally i was able to do 10K in an hour!! PR na! but too bad i didn’t know about the new gun time. By 5am, i wasn’t allowed to go into the streets to park, wasn’t allowed to pass through the starting line to be tagged and so ended up with PR ng worst time! Hay naku! :(
