Running Begins at 40+

By: Larry Duruin

I am 41 yrs old and a father. I started running last 2012 and my first run is a 5 kilometer race and I felt tired and dizzy when I crossed the finish line. What amazed me was to see others happily crossing the finish line, then I started telling people my first race experience, and they told me that i’m too old for this hard activity and advised me to just jog around.

But that did not stop me, seeing older people running around with their stories of triumph made me challenge myself to train hard and focused on this activity. I believe that if others can do it, I should be able to do it as well.

Now, with hard work and training, I have conquered 3 Full marathons, 1st place finisher in a 5KM fun run and a finisher in the recently concluded Mayon360 with a total distance of 80 kilometer and i’m still hungry for more. This made me believe that age is just a number and that running can begin at 40.

  2. WOW! In the 1 year since you started, 3 Marathons and an 80km – all in one year!
Ang galing po! Is it just me, or medyo bitin sa kwento? More please :)

  3. Start RUNNING at d
    Age 40 to 41..
    in 1 year for 3 – 42k
    and 1 – 80k

    hehehe
    Sir naman napaka mapag…
    BIRO..

DO ur MATH my fellow RUNNERS..

    • There is always that chance. The will to power is an incredible thing. Nonetheless, you raise valid reservations, which I think can be easily resolved by Sir Larry, say race events and results. But I believe this, and I wish Sir Larry the best of health always!

Para makita nyo po yung totoo at you can do your math also.

  4. w0w!? No joke? Totoo po ito? At d age of 41 gnun kbiliz mg adapth ung katawan nyu ?? 5k finisher. Uu . Peo 3 full mara? Tpos last yr lang kau ng start? Wow! Ang galing pu kung totoo tlga. Ikaw na hehe!

    • Google lang mga pips

T2n, rupm, qcim, condura, mayon 360 nasa 5:15 ang takbo sa full.

Well iba talaga pag dedicated. Honestly, ilang taon ako tumatakbo bago ako nag full marathon, tapos pareho pa kami ng time. Heheheh mas bata pa ako noon ha at naacomplish nya yon within 1 year ng active running.

Congrats manong larry! Tuloy tuloy pa sa pagtakbo!

      • tama kayo sir Mark-runner laki ako sa hirap. and thanks for your effort to research my previous race. i do appreciate it much. hope i could meet you on the road. i do my regular training at BGC-Honda every thursday with the Storm CHaser and every tuesday at Ayala Triad.

    • @notsoold

Sir sa ayala triangle ako t-th usually 6:30 onwards pero wala akong takbo this week. Baka nagkakasalubong na tayo. Hehehe.

      -mark

    • +1

  6. I wont doubt him if He say so…. I know its possible being at that age , Im already 37 when I started running regularly / I will turn 39 soon but Im now a triathlon addict able to finish 1.2miles swim / 56 miles bike ride / 13 miles run…… it only takes good training .. and to be honest I dont even train as much as the people I know so siguro He train probably few many times harder …. so kung kaya nya kaya nyo rin just train smart and safe….

    • you are definitely right sir randolf. proper training and discipline plus the support of your family can take you further. sana maging tri athlete din ako kagaya nyo. if my budgets permits.

Go lang ng go Kuya. At salamat sa story mo, medyo nabitin nga lang ako.hehe, -marjohn

  8. congratulations harry…inspirasyon ko kayo…i’m 42 years old, nagsimula ako sumali sa 5k ngayon november lang. 41 ako nun…ngayon nagpapatuloy sa training…don’t let your doubters bring you down, gawin nyo pong inspiration to train hard…mabuhay po kayo…

  9. Haha, shortcut lang ang kwento. Siempre pa, dumaan din sa 10k, 16k, 21k, 32k, 42k, 50k or 65k ng ilan panahon bago tumahak sa 80k. Normal ang progression na yan. Bata pa nga yan considering meron mga seniors and beyond 60 years old nag 100k+ pa sinasalihan. Cheers and congrats sir! 😊
