Miles for Smiles – Official Press Release

WILL YOU RUN FOR A SMILE?

Run for Smiles - Cleft

For some people, it takes time, sweat, the occasional tears and total commitment to yield one beautiful smile. The team of doctors and surgeons that make up the Noordhoff Craniofacial Foundation Philippines, Inc. (NCFPI) do just that on a weekly basis as one in every 500 Filipinos are born with cleft.

On Mondays, children with “bingot” or cleft palates and craniofacial abnormalities can be seen crowding the east wing of Our Lady of Peace Hospital, a nondescript facility near the Bamboo Organ Church in Las Pinas. The numbers average to fifty in a day lining up to specialized cubicles for pediatric, dental, orthodontic, speech therapy, psychology and plastic surgery consultation. Tuesdays are reserved exclusively for surgeries to being done at Our Lady of Peace and PGH. “We are not a stitch-and-go medical mission. We provide the most comprehensive care based on world class standards”, clarifies   NCFPI President, Glenda de Villa DMD Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. All the doctors are volunteers yet through consistency, they developed a systematized operation that every patient has already been attended to by 5pm.

The earlier the better – a two-day old baby can undergo surgery provided he’s healthy and within the normal birth weight. At the foundation, very young kids with cleft have very open smiles not knowing how they are different from others, but uninformed parents risk subjecting their children to social ignorance and discrimination.

On August 22 – Sunday at The Bonifacio Global City, NCFPI presents MILES for SMILES – ”It’s riding the running race craze but it’s a good way to reach a large audience and share the news that comprehensive cleft care is available for free?” smiles de Villa. Events are 3k, 5k, 10k and 16k for the Men’s and Women’s Open and 400-meter dash for kids ages 10 and below. Those who want to sponsor a cleft child can join the “10 for a Smile” group category with 10 participants for either the 10k or 16k (10 miles) events.

NCFPI is a non-profit organization inspired by the “love makes whole“ ideals of Dr. M. Samuel Noordhoff, a renowned American surgeon and philanthropist.  Initially established in Taiwan and the US, the Noordhoff Craniofacial Foundation aims to establish comprehensive cleft care centers sustained by support from local bodies.

  1. B, registration is at chris sports. good luck on your run :)

Pinoy Fitness, is it possible to ask the organizers to extend the road closure? rule #4 has stated that it will only be for 1 hr and 15 minutes then i have to run on the footpath at my own risk. at this point, it will be difficult for me to complete my 16k run in such a timeframe. an average runner would need at least 1.5hrs to cover the said distance

  2. ask ko lng po, y may kasabay rin sya na running event sa aug 22, same place din. yung global run? ngtaka lng po ako. want to join kc miles for smiles.
