Race at the historic site of Corregidor!

The Corregidor Aquathlon Challenge is a 400m swim, 7km run, 400m swim race coursing through the island dubbed as The Rock. The swim leg takes place in the South beach area, where the former US Navy wharf is located and believe it or not, hidden treasure.

Not only did Corregidor served as a base defense for Manila Bay but The Rock also became a stronghold for the vast horde of the Philippine National Treasury and the Philippine Central Bank- 51 tons of gold bullion, 32 tons of silver bullion, 140 tons of silver pesos and centavos and millions of paper treasury notes, bonds and stocks-around 2 tons of gold bullion in various sized ingots and unknown number of precious stones and foreign currency.

During the siege of Corregidor, attempts have been made to transfer all treasures off the island but where hampered by constant bombings during the day. 10 tons of silver was unaccounted for, either dumped in the South beach or thrown over the dock to prevent fall into Japanese hands. But the Japanese was well aware of the clandestine dumping and after the island’s surrender, forced US Navy divers to dive for the coins, but instead, POW divers purposely broke open the cases on the bottom and sent up only partial containers. Only 2 million pesos was recovered, a fraction of what was on the bottom.

The run leg takes you around the Wainwright Memorial and to the topside area. Elevation from sea level is 400 feet and higher. The course will pass through the Middleside Barracks; the 4 10-ton 12in mortars of Battery Way; the World’s longest military barracks- the Mile-Long Barracks, which actually is 1520feet (1/3 of a mile); the Pacific War Memorial; the Spanish lighthouse and Fort Mills HQ.
